Lamp shade with spider connection works just fine. 8 inch tall shade is a little short, 10 inch is too tall and won't sit correctly with the geometry of the arm.
It's a great lamp and I'm very pleased with it but I wouldn't have purchased it if I had known how hard it was to assemble. It took 2 of us almost 2 hours. It was very hard to keep the magazine rack pieces in position while tightening the legs.
It is perfect for a chair in my bedroom. My house is a 200 year old farm house and I keep my phone on it. There is plenty of space to keep papers I'm using and write if needed and it doesn't look too modern. I changed the shade. I must admit I didn't realize that one tool was all I needed to put it together.
